Fireside Chat: DonateNYC and NYC Hospitality Alliance

donateNYC's Food Portal was launched by DSNY in February 2019 to connect food businesses with excess food to nonprofits that feed their community. After the first year of building an active userbase, diverting 80 tons of food from landfill, and gaining national recognition, the City was shut down by COVID. Two of the hardest hit industries, the food business sector and nonprofits responding to a dramatic need for food, were also two of the key users of the Food Portal.

Andrew Rigie from NYC Hospitality Alliance will speak to donateNYC about where the restaurant industry is now, lessons learned by the restaurants that organized assistance programs during COVID, and how the industry can best integrate food donations into business operations as it rebuilds.

Alissa Westervelt, donateNYC

Alissa Westervelt is the Senior Manager for donateNYC, a program at DSNY supporting reuse and donations as part of the City’s zero waste goals. Since joining donateNYC she had led the team to facilitate donations of thousands of tons of food and durable goods, responded to COVID by routing emergency food and supplies to nonprofits, and spearheaded Refashion Week NYC, a week of fashion events celebrating low waste and sustainable fashion.

Andrew Rigie, New York City Hospitality Alliance

Andrew Rigie is the Executive Director of the New York City Hospitality Alliance, an association representing restaurants and nightlife venues throughout the five boroughs.
